Professional History

  • In 1967, together with two other colleagues, he formed the MMV Architetti Associati. This activity is characterized, in the early 70’s, by a significant production in the field of residential-tourist structures. From the mid 70’s, he concentrated his work on public housing and the various social implications relating to it and went on to carry out numerous innovative public housing projects.
  • In the 80’s, he began the collaboration with Texas Instruments, which has led to the specialization in the design of industrial construction and facilities, dedicated to the production and the utilization of electronic material and equipment. In this respect he worked side by side with American and Japanese specialists in experimenting and executing advanced technological industrial buildings.
  • At the beginning of the 90’s Arch. Mercurio was appointed as Corporate Worldwide Architect for Texas Instruments Inc.
  • In 1991 he started the Design of AMOS 1, Sub-micron Wafer Fabrication Building, an Industrial complex for D-ram manufacturing for Texas Instruments.
  • In 1992 he set up  A.M. Architetti and focused his professional activity in the field of the Semiconductor Industrial Design with the construction of AMOS 1, Sub-micron Wafer Fabrication Building, an Industrial complex for D-ram manufacturing for Texas Instruments.
  • From 1992 up to 1995 several international Companies commissioned him the design of important industrial plants for the research and production in the semiconductors fields in Europe, USA and the Far East.
  • In 1995 he founded A.M. Associates with the Main Office set in Singapore for the control and  the management of projects in Asia and he starts the collaboration with this Associated Company in order to cooperate on projects in the South East Asia.
  • In 1999 he founded A.M. Structures due to the increasing demand of services in the structural field.
  • From 1999 to 2004 he was constantly involved in specific kind of industrial works, designing and constructing several projects in the USA, Europe and Asia, for the most important international Semiconductors Companies, as STMicroelectronics, SSMC (Philips/TSMC/EDB), AMD, Acer, Tech, UMC, Micron, Chartered Semiconductor and Texas Instruments.
  • In 2002, after the entrance of China in the WTO, A.M.Associates Singapore opened a branch office in Shanghai; Arch. Alfonso Mercurio, as Principal Architect, participates to many competitions, winning the design for the project of Jing An New building district in Shanghai.
  • In 2002 – 2003 Arch. Mercurio was invited to teach “Advanced Industrial Architecture”  by the University of Rome, Engineering Branch.
  • In 2003 he designed a Semiconductor plant for the “Dubai Silicon Oasis” and the “Al Khabeesi Show Room” in Dubai (UAE).
  • In February 2004 he participated to the conference “M6_STMicroelectronics: Architectural proposal for the re-qualification of Catania’s Industrial Area; in December he was invited by the University of Tongji in Shanghai to lead a conference on “New trends of the Italian Architecture”.
  • In 2004 a new branch office was opened in Tripoli, Libya.
  • 2004-2005 Arch. Alfonso Mercurio designed the feasibility study and preliminary design of the “Delle Aquile Stadium” for the Italian Football Club Lazio. The design foresees a multi functional complex with gymnasium, kinder garden, swimming-pools, tennis courts, basket and volley fields, and also trade centres with cinemas, museums, all of fame, etc.
  • In 2005 A.M. Architetti is involved in the design and construction management of interiors of many V.I.P. buildings and shops downtown Rome like Cartier’s Boutique in Via Condotti.

In the same year the project  regarding “Housing complex 1/A+B/2005 F” won the award in the International Competition held by the People’s Committee of the City of Tripoli.

  • In 2005-2006 he worked for Micron Technology, Avezzano   (Italy); he was also involved in the preliminary and the detail design of a Primary School and a Health Care Residence.
  • In 2007 he continued working in the industrial field, with some of his international clients, Texas Instruments and AMD.
  • In 2008 he worked on many international projects: in Rome, for an housing complex in the district of “Bufalotta”; in Singapore, for the Hamilton Scotts Condominium and Office building and in Tripoli (Libya) for the new Supreme Court Project.
  • In 2009 he established a collaboration the newly born 3Sun Company in Catania, focused on the production of photovoltaic panels. He started with the conceptual and preliminary design of a new building and continued with the conversion of the existing M6  buildings of photovoltaic panels.
  • In the last three years, Arch. Alfonso Mercurio and the AMA Group’s Staff developed new project especially in the Health and Sports area, like the conceptual design of the Golf Club “Santi Apostoli” and the Physiotherapy Clinic for Physical Rehabilitation in Tripoli (Libya)
  • In May 2012 he was appointed Professor by the International Academy of Architecture in Sofia

A.M.A. Group’s staff gathers several architects and engineers of various nationalities with a variable number of draftsmen together with an administration, cost control and quality department.
