OMA wins a competition to design a new Shenzhen financial center

OMA’s team was chosen from seven international architecture firms in a competition to design new Shenzhen International Conference and Exchange Center (IFEC). The winning project is collaboration between OMA and CCDI and combines large scale conference facilities with a 400-room hotel and public programs. The new financial center will be located at the waterfront of Qianhai, the New District in the Pearl River Delta and it will function as a link between Qianhai’s future main public transport hub and a waterfront park, which connects the various Qianhai districts through a shared public and cultural program.
The complex consists of three parts: the conference center is shaped into stepped volumes with parkview terraces; the hotel, higher than the conference center, is a three-dimensional polyhedron; the third volume contains hotel amenities and public programs and is oriented to the center of the business district.
At the heart of the complex is a large urban atrium with a foyer for the conference center and the hotel. The atrium brings in the public domain and can be separately programmed for cultural events, strengthening the relation between the professional domain and public life in Qianhai.
