IAA International Architecture Exhibition - Competitions for Architectural Projects and Built Works and Students’ Diploma Projects are in their XVI edition and have always been an integral part of Interarch, the Architecture Biennale promoted by the Academy in cooperation with the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy. Due to Covid pandemic, IAA World Council decided to postpone the Biennale to 2021, considering necessary, however, in this moment of great difficulty for humanity, to give a positive and hopeful message to the architecture world.

We did so aware that the moment wouldn’t encourage participation, but that it was also necessary to give continuity to the promotion and enhancement of architecture in the world, by leaving the competition deadline unchanged.

For this reason, an international prestigious jury commission has been appointed, composed of IAA Academicians and Professors from all over the world: Richard England (Malta), Juhani Pallasmaa (Finland), Brian Spencer (USA), Cesare Maria Casati (Italy) and Martin Drahovsky (Slovakia). We thank them for their efforts in bringing the jury's work to a successful conclusion in emergency conditions.

It’s a competition both for professionals and students coming from 10 nations. In the previous editions designers came mostly from Europe and some from United States, while in this edition we had a significant presence of architects from East Asia.

The international design scenario was enriched by architectures very focused on sustainability and low-cost construction with solutions closely linked to identity techniques and strongly connected to the territories of origin.

We have also decided in this edition, for the first time, to award to the winners a trophy consisting of an iconic object designed exclusively for us by Acad. Richard England, signed by him and produced in a limited and numbered edition.

It is a black-painted steel cylinder that will become the permanent symbol of IAA International Architecture Prize.

The exhibition of the works taking part in the competition and of the winners in the different categories has been displaced at the University of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy, Sofia in the period 16-27 November 2020.
