GABROVACKA RIVER IN NIS, SERBIA

THEORETICAL APPROACH TO THE PEDESTRIAN ZONE OF THE CITY AND REALIZATION OF THE FENCE ON THE RETAINING WALL OF THE GABROVACKA RIVER IN NIS, SERBIA

The fence in the housing-office district of the city was realized as one segment in the framework of the theoretical analysis presented in the tabular overview of the landscaping of Nis and its pedestrian zone. The conceptual and contracting designs for the fence on the retaining wall along the Gabrovacka river in Nis, which is approximately long 150 meters, were created at the Institute of Civil Engineering and Architecture of the faculty of Civil Engineering of the University of Nis, in April 1988. The fence was placed at the retaining concrete wall on the grade separated ground level, and it was made from the standard metal profiles with circular, interweaving elements, with an idea to promote a more radical, fresher image of the city composition in visual and designing terms, creating its memory anew. The designer’s attention was to interpolate a new iconic, symbolically powerful, non-cliché metabolical form which impressively defines the contemporary identity, ecourbarchitectonic, artistic and historically-cultural spirit of micro-ambient entities. The horizontality of the physical structure was stressed, in combination with the vegetative area in the vicinity, as well as good organic, visual correlation of building elements of forms.
