Frank Gehry’s Luma Arles Tower in the South of France is opening soon.
The aluminium twisting 56-metre-tall building will contain artist studios, seminar rooms and research facilities.
The project is inspired by the limestone cliffs surrounding the city and has an irregular composition of 11,000 aluminium panels around a concrete and steel structure. Located on an abandoned rail yard, the project has completely transformed the area.
The glass and stone cylindrical base refers to the Roman amphitheatre in Arles, part of the city’s UNESCO heritage site.
Luma Arles will occupy a 20 acre site when it’s complete and the Arts center will be the centre-piece.
The area scheme will add to the project a public park, named the Parc des Ateliers, which has been developed by Belgian landscape studio Bureau Bas Smets.
