Gasimzada Elbay Enver
Chairman of the Union of Architects of Azerbaijan Elbay Anvar Gasimzada was born in Baku in 1948. In 1971 he graduated from the Department of Architecture of the Azerbaijan Polytechnic Institute.
In 1971-1975 he dealt with landscape architecture problems, addressing the issues of natural landscape and the harmonization of structures erected in various districts of Baku. In 1975-1989 he worked at the Institute of Construction Design in the Rural Areas of the country. In 1976 he did postgraduate studies on urban planning problems at the Art and Architecture Institute of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences.
He was the author of a number of master plans for small settlements. At that time, he was closely involved in the International Programme “Saman (Chaff) architecture”, and developed various projects implemented in this area.
In 1989-2001 he served as the Chief Architect of Baku and Head of the Main Department of Architecture and Urban Planning of the Baku Mayor’s Office.
Elbay Gasimzada is the author of more than 150 projects. Most of them have been realised. He published more than 80 articles and 14 books.
In 1990 he was awarded the honorary title of “Honoured Architect of Azerbaijan”, in 2000 he was bestowed with the highest award of the country – the Order of “Glory”. Three times he was marked with “Humay” National Award; twice he received National Prize “Ugur. He participated in several international competitions “The Best Project of the Year” organised by the Association of Unions of Architects of the CIS countries and was awarded 34 diplomas.
Elbay Gasimzada is a full member and a vice-president of International Academy of Architecture of Eastern Countries, the academician of the International Academy of Architecture of Moscow at UNESCO and Professor of the Azerbaijan University of Architecture and Construction. He is the Head of the Baku Academic Centre of the International Academy of Architecture. Since 2017 he has been a member of the Council of the International Union of Architects.
In 2013, following the instruction of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, 25 items of books on architecture in Azerbaijani, Russian and English languages were published, including the first published “History of Azerbaijan Architecture” in five volumes headed by Elbay Gasimzada.
He participated in the World Architects Congresses held in Chicago, Barcelona, Lausanne, Beijing, Turin, Tokyo and Seoul.
Elbay Gasimzada is a professor of the architecture faculty at the Azerbaijan University of Architecture and Construction and Head of the Department of “Architectural Design and Urban Planning”.
