The IAA Academician Massimiliano Fuksas and his team have won a competition to design a new airport building in Gelendzhik, Russia.
Gelendzhik is the third most popular Black Sea resort city in Russia and the project with it’s size and importance will be the new region landmark which will provide connection to eleven domestic destinations like Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kazan and Yekaterinburg.
The airport design is based on the flight of birds. Studio Fuksas wanted to represent the dynamic and poetic movement of a bird at the moment it suddenly changes direction of flight.
Focusing on the qualities of space experience and the control of natural light, the airport was also developed to respect local values. Surrounding landscape is prioritised with a massive use of typical local trees in the project area.
Very important is the circulation system of the airport area which is designed as a one-way ring road. The project also strives to reduce resource consumption and foster environmental awareness. The aim of design is to highlight qualities belonging to the local natural environment.
